Kratom Tree

The beautiful and majestic kratom tree can grow up to 80 feet tall if left undistributed, but most trees used in kratom production are around 25 feet tall and about 12 feet wide. The leaves are compound shaped with an even number of dark green leaves, which sprout from a single stem. The leaves contain an impressive array of phytol-chemical compounds, some of which have not even started to be researched for potential benefits.

Most often, the leaves of the kratom tree are chewed green. While bitter and less-than-appetizing, the leaves offer the most rapid release of kratom’s supportive properties. Most often, the central rib of the leaf is removed before chewing to help cut back on some of the bitterness. One leaf generally weighs about 2 grams. Habitual daily users can chew anywhere from five to thirty leaves a day.

What is Kratom?

The leaves of the tree can be chewed and then ingested, or it can be dried or brewed into a tea. Kratom extract can be used to make liquid tinctures. Most often, liquid kratom is used to help with stress management for support with athletic endeavors. It might also have some positive gastrointestinal effects and can support your intestinal health. Kratom can be also potentially support mental wellness and stress management.

Though it’s been stigmatized here in the west as a “drug” that should be illegal, the people of Southeast Asia have long relied on the benefits of kratom. It’s estimated that kratom is used by half of all men in Thailand on a daily basis.
The primary active compounds of kratom, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, act as opioid receptor antagonists, leading many advocates to make the connection between kratom and morphine. However, more research is needed to understand the pharmacology of kratom and the specific ways it works with the human brain.

Steeped in History

Steeped in History

Not only does kratom boast an impressive array of potential benefits, but it’s also a medicinal herb that’s been around for a long, long time. Even though kratom is a fairly newcomer on the market, it’s actually been around for centuries. Indigenous people in Southeast Asia have been using kratom for thousands of years to help offset the challenges. It’s also been used for relaxation and for natural energy production. But because it’s so “new” to the Western world, there’s so much misinformation about kratom and how it works.

This tropical evergreen tree is actually a part of the coffee family. That makes sense, since it’s been used for years as a stimulant. Its first documented use in traditional remedies dates to the early 19th century, where it was made into a tree and consumed to help workers remain alert.

In its current incarnation, kratom is being used in much the same way as it always has been – as both a stimulant and as a relaxant. Kratom naturally promotes feelings of ease and supports the body's natural processes.

Making Kratom

Kratom is made by boiling large amounts of fresh kratom leaves. The leaves are boiled for an extended period of time until a soft brown resin is created. Then the resin is further processed into an extract or bagged into tea form.

How Does Kratom Work?

How Does Kratom Work

Scientists believe that kratom works by targeting the opioid receptors in the brain. At very small serving sizes, this means that kratom produces stimulating effects and help support the body's natural energy production process. Kratom could be used when preparing for exams, or whenever you need an added bit of a natural boost. At small serving sizes, kratom can also strengthen stress management. At very high serving sizes, kratom provides sedative effects, so it’s useful to help improve your sleep quality.

The amount of active kratom in products sold online and in shops varies greatly. This makes it difficult to gauge the effect of a serving sizes and suggest serving guidelines. The most important thing to remember is that kratom affects everyone differently. Starting out with small serving sizes to test your own tolerance level is highly recommended.
